repent
come with every wound
of every person you have ever loved
every lie you have told yourself
and every sin you have committed
and every heart you’ve ever broken
come with hurt
come with frustration
and the tears you’ve ever tasted
come with every shame that made you a man
and the vulnerability that made you a woman
come with the disappointments of your mother
come with regrets
and every night you went to bed feeling worthless
with every cracked knuckle
and bruised lips
come with your hidden secrets
that you’ve never told anyone
come with your heavy heart
and the emptiness
come and speak to God
He is listening.

Sign Language, please.
I just got back from the third week of my ASL class and subhan’Allah I feel empowered to continue educating myself. Insh’Allah I will strive toward becoming proficient in sign language to help facilitate an understanding between deaf and hearing Muslims as well as raise awareness of Deaf Muslim’s issues. The teacher is a twenty-something year old girl who grew up incapable of expressing herself or understanding anyone around her. Not until high school she was forced to learn sign language to communicate with others. She went on explaining the struggle within the Muslim deaf community. Many deaf Muslims lack adequate knowledge in Islam and most are illiterate and cannot understand the Quran.
As a result many deaf Muslims leave Islam and convert to Christianity because interpreters are provided during religious services (and they feel a sense of belonging). The Muslim community completely neglects the importance and rights of deaf Muslims. Interpreters are not provided during Friday services or any other major Islamic events. This is problematic and as a Muslim Ummah we need to acknowledge the rights of deaf Muslims and help make Islam accessible and inclusive for everyone. It is our obligation as hearing Muslims to raise awareness, spread dawah and create a stronger brotherhood/sisterhood with deaf Muslims insh’Allah.
Upcoming GDM’s Annual Fundraising Dinner!
a girl like his mother
he said he wants a girl like his mother,
who speaks God - and
dresses like no other man has ever embraced her presence
he said he wants a woman with self-respect
who doesn’t talk back.
a woman that walks two steps behind him
and allows him to be a man.
he said he wants a woman to accept his tired past.
and all the girls he has ever been with,
soft spoken with a feminine grace
he said he wants a woman with boundaries -
and knows her value.
and to birth children with the same eyes
he wants a woman that hides - her disappointments under her tongue
and every wound under her veil
a woman that will stay - even when he decides to walk away.
he wants a woman who is pious,
understanding,
like his mother.
(my response)
what have you done to deserve her?
